Rocks churches

These badly damaged churches, hewn into the sheer rocks at the village of Ivanovo, about 20 km from the city of Rousse. The Rocks Churches date back to the 14th century. However, their ever-bright murals are a significant record of 14th century Bulgarian painting. The portrait of King Ivan Alexander (1331-1371), who sponsored the construction of these churches, is painted amidst biblical murals in the Archangel’s Church - the best preserved one. Rocks Churches are included in UNESCO’s World Culture and Nature Heritage Program.
